Gaskets
The type of gasket to be used is chosen based on the medium that the gasket is to seal out, such as water, oil or chemicals. Heat and pressure resistance are other important factors.
– Soft
These are often non-metallic, single-layer materials. The flexibility of the material and the price are the determining factors. Polyethylene is a cheap material, while Teflon, which is more expensive, may be used in cases that require a high degree of heat resistance.
– Hard
Are often metallic and can be completely flat or grooved for better sealing properties.
– Multi-layers
Gaskets that have more than one layer of the same or different materials. Most often, the various layers have the same shape, but they can also be shaped differently.
– Multi-function
These products fulfi ll a function in addition to sealing. Examples include gaskets with built-in clack valves and/or magnetic sensors.
Metal
Metal products include knives, protective plates and spacers, for example. Depending on the product, the metals can be thin, thick, hard or soft. The type of metal chosen is determined by factors such as the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties required.
Tapes
Products manufactured of tape or combinations of tape and other materials are perhaps a less well-known group of products. Tape often forms part of a simple, cheap, but nevertheless optimal, solution to what may be a knotty problem. The choice of the material that should be used together with the tape is often the crucial issue in product design.
